Workshop Overview

Four-Day Throwing Workshop — Elegant Vases

A four-day intermediate throwing workshop specialising in the creation of tall, elegant vases and vessels, with a particular focus on proportion, balance, weight distribution and the development of refined forms.

Day 1 — Building Height & Stability

Morning - Introduction to throwing tall forms, focusing on cylinders. Participants will work on building height while maintaining stability, even walls and controlled distribution of clay.

Afternoon - Demo: Vase Form.

Examining how to develop an elegant vase from the initial cylinder, with a focus on proportion, balance and silhouette.

Day 2 — Bottles & Neck Forms

Morning- Demo: Long-Neck & Short-Neck Bottle Forms

Looking at different relationships between the body, shoulder and neck, and how shifts in scale create very different vessel shapes.

Afternoon- Demo: Fluted / Flared Bottle Form

Working with the movement and expansion of the vessel, considering flaring, rhythm and controlled shaping.

Day 3 — Geometry, Volume & Transformation

Morning- Demo: Geometrical / Angular Forms. Investigating more structured and architectural vessels, focusing on creating clean lines, controlled angles and balanced dimensions.

Afternoon- Demo: Moon Jar. Examining volume, symmetry and the relationship between a vessel’s width, height and opening.

Additional Demo: Changing Forms

A practical demonstration of how to transform an initial thrown piece into something completely different, showing how manipulation, compression, opening and reshaping can alter the character and scale of a vessel.

Day 4 — Trimming & Refinement

Morning- Trimming Demo & Practice. Focusing on trimming tall vessels, refining dimensions and creating an appropriate foot or base.

Afternoon- Continued trimming and refinement, with individual guidance and feedback. Participants will work on finishing their pieces and developing a more confident understanding of proportion, balance and form.

About the instructor – Lyes Kachaou

Lyes is a ceramicist based on Réunion Island. He has mastered the technical skills of throwing, trimming, and shaping needed to bring his pieces to life, working with a real understanding of how clay can be shaped . His work is defined by clean, elegant forms — tall, bottle-shaped vases, refined bowls, and vessels with confident, minimal silhouettes — each piece built with careful attention to proportion and balance. Vases remain his particular specialty, a form he returns to again and again, refining the relationship between structure and grace.
